I prefer to keep it SMART though ...

I'm sure you've heard of the old adage of 'keep it simple, stupid'? Well, my take on the KISS principle is 'Keep it Simple, SMART'. Business owners and entrepreneurs are working harder than ever, but I've at least two recent examples of why they should make their business simpler by applying the KISS Principle - let me explain ...

The KISS Principle says you should 'keep it simple, stupid' whereas I feel it should be 'keep it simple, SMART'. What part of your business could you simplify today?

I'm currently working with two organisations - one a global manufacturing company and the other a local medium-size multi-disciplined company. Both are delivering training programmes.

"They have made their systems and the management of them far too complicated!"

The impact is that the levels of efficiency and effectiveness are compromised and the level and quality of service is now suffering. In both cases, what needs to happen is a simplified set of processes and a proper management system put in place.

I spent 2 hours this morning thrashing out some details on a new project that needs to be unstoppable, yet oh so simple, and when you think about it, all the very best things in business are! So think about the following:

  • There are no complex lines on your new iPhone 6 are there?

  • Google's home page isn't complex is it?

  • Try ordering from Amazon with just half an eye on the simplicity of the process.

  • Harrods sales happens just once a year and it's really simple ...

Yet, despite all the evidence to the contrary, so many of us in business preside over operations that have complexity built in.

  • Truth is your pricing policy is probably too complicated,

  • Your product range could be simplified,

  • Your quote process could be streamlined,

  • Your window display, van signage, web site, email campaigns, diary management, etc, etc heck, they're probably all too complex!

So why not spent a couple of hours and review your processes and systems and apply the KISS principle? Simplify the process by using the SMART goal setting technique then see what could you simplify this week!

"Your clients will be even more eager to spend their well-earned cash with you if you make it simple enough for them!"
