Having attended a great breakfast networking meeting the other day, I was reminded of the value of networking in building business relationships over time to allow those who want your products and services to really get to know, like and trust you ...
Be the farmer and sow the seeds for future harvesting. You will build far better business relationships when people know, like and trust you!
I'm sure you'll know the old adage that people buy from people", so you need to attend networking meetings and learn to listen (you've two ears and one mouth, so remember to listen twice as much as you speak!) to other people and ask about their business and how they add value to their clients.
If they then ask you what you do, take the time to then build the relationship without trying to sell. If they don't ask, then move on as they're 'gamekeepers' not 'farmers'.
Here are some pointers about these critical aspects of successful networking:
Getting Known: Go to as many and appropriate networking meetings as possible and get to know as many people as possible. Be very selective, as some have a membership scheme, so weigh up the costs i.e. joining and meeting fees, time of day, travel, type of businesses that generally attend etc
Getting Liked: By going regularly you will need to build rapport with as many business owners as possible. Remember to be a 'farmer' by sowing seeds for future harvesting. It's strange that building rapport is not taught in schools as it's probably one of the most essential elements of interpersonal skills that all people in business must have!
Gaining Trust: By building business relationships over time, you begin to gain trust from your fellow networkers. Once you've gained trust then your fellow business entrepreneurs will begin to have the confidence to begin referring business to you
Networking isn't easy at first, but it can become as natural as breathing.
Being a farmer and sowing seeds for future harvesting means that people will get to know, like and trust you quicker and want to build business relationships with you.
And when they need your particular product or service, or know of someone else in need, who will be the first person they call?
